Maitland is the
geographical heart of the Yorke Peninsula. Wide streets and and bountiful trees make the
town a pleasant stop-over on any Yorke Peninsula trip. The town offers much for the casual
visitor, such as the town hall's stunning tapestry, the unique "Garage" Motor
museum, the YP Bird Rescuers and the National Trust museum. |

The
Maitland Institute
The institute's foundation stone was laid on January 16th, 1882,
by Mrs. S Rogers. The two storey facade was opened on 16th January, 1884. It had offices,
a library, reading rooms, and a hall with seating for 450 people. A new stage and supper
room were added at the rear in 1910. Extensive alterations in 1957 included a foyer,
ballroom, corporation offices, new library, and staggered seating in the theatre. Further
extensions were added in 1999, including additional wing space, change rooms, and an
industrial kitchen. |

Maitland Bakery
Aaron Jarrett built Maitland's first bake-house and the first
bread supply was baked in march of 1878. It was bought by William Otto Mullner who added
two new shops in 1914. K and B fenwick bought the premises in 1957. |

Maitland Motors
Messers Bowey and T Bowden built one of Maitland's first garages
on this site. In 1916, L M Gilbert became the proprietor and in 1922 he installed the
first petrol bowser in a South Australian provincial town. The ownership passed to the
Toop family in 1948. |

The Catholic
Church
St Bartholomew's foundation stone was laid on 23 May, 1875. In
July 1884, the interior walls were plastered, a porch, vestry, and gallery were added
(renovations needed after the roof of the church blew off!) A school was run in the
presbytery next door from 1884 until 1889. The church was refurbished and upgraded again
in 1984. |
